Democratic Party of Illinois Celebrates House Passage of The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal

Last night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed President Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal, which will make a once-in-a-generation investment in our country’s infrastructure. In response, Democratic Party of Illinois Chair Rep. Robin Kelly released the following statement:

“As promised, President Biden and Illinois Democrats worked across the aisle to forge consensus and deliver results for Illinois families. The Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will create good-paying union jobs, grow our economy, and make much-needed improvements to critical infrastructure like Illinois’ roads and highways; bridges and transit; drinking water systems; and broadband. With President Biden’s signature, the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal will position Illinois workers, farmers, and businesses to compete and win in the 21st century.”

Based on funding formula alone, the state of Illinois would expect to receive:

  • $9.8 billion to improve highways and $1.4 billion for bridge replacement and repairs over five years.
  • $4 billion over five years to improve public transportation options across the state.
  • $149 million over five years to support the expansion of an EV charging network in the state. Illinois will also have the opportunity to apply for the $2.5 billion in grant funding dedicated to EV charging in the bill.
  • A minimum of $100 million to help provide broadband coverage across the state, including providing access to the at least 228,000 Illinoisans who currently lack it. 2,926,999 or 23% of people in Illinois will also be eligible for the Affordability Connectivity Benefit, which will help low-income families afford internet access.
  • $22 million to protect against cyberattacks.
  • $1.7 billion over five years to improve water infrastructure across the state and ensure that clean, safe drinking water is a right in all communities.
  • $616 million over five years to improve Illinois’ airports.
