Video in celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

More than ever before, as we celebrate the birthday, legacy and teachings of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King today, let’s also remember his gift of prophesy. He admonished us on the dangers of not addressing the nations’ historical millstone of social and economic inequality. Indeed, the forces of tyranny continue to march to the drumbeat of discrimination and disenfranchisement; flying in the face of Dr. King’s dream and the democratic tenets of our Constitution. Six decades ago, Dr. King said “America must begin the struggle for democracy at home. The advocacy of free elections in Europe by American officials is hypocrisy when free elections are not held in great sections of America”.  Then as now. many of the solutions to todays’ issues can be found in his intersecting of the American Labor movement and the Civil Rights movement.  This is true as we’ve seen the forces of autocracy systematically attempt to eviscerate the leadership of both of these movements.  They must be deterred and it will take all of us to insure that they are not successful. This short clip shows the implications, then and now, of heeding his call for social and economic justice.  How prescient he was; almost as he was still with us.  He is.  Happy Birthday, Dr. King.
